I have been thinking about adding Dumas to the Classics Challenge, and I might have to try the Pevear translation. The English-speaking world is indebted to these two magnificent translators, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, for revealing more of its hidden riches than any who have tried to translate the book before. I've seen other sites do similar things with Pevear and Volokhonsky's War and Peace translation. Of course, for Russian lit I go straight for Pevear & Volokhonsky! What's the first thing(s) you read in the morning? (1713-68) had a marked influence on the young Tolstoy, particularly with his Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), which stands behind Tolstoy's first piece of fiction, 'A History of Yesterday' (1851), and part of which Tolstoy translated.
